Developments in Amsterdam! Before getting down to detail in this article, we need to provide some background information. What do we mean by Zuidas and Zuidasdok? Amsterdam’s municipal authority, City of Amsterdam, has a department called Zuidas. Zuidasdok is a project organisation that has been set up by Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail and City of Amsterdam. Together, they are referred to as Amsterdam Zuidas. This close partnership has been tasked with creating a Zuidas urban district and ensuring good accessibility to the area. Due to its strategic location, this area is characterised by a very high influx of visitors.
Preparing for this huge project
The City of Amsterdam and GVB (Amsterdam’s public transport authority) are both preparing for the extensive construction works that ‘Project ZuidasDok’ in Amsterdam involves. The ‘Zuidas’ area extends alongside the A10 motorway. The Zuidas section of the A10 will be relocated in a tunnel and routed through the area below the surface. Zuidas railway station and the track infrastructure there are often described as the busiest railway hub in all of the Netherlands. As scaling up this station for even more train and tram traffic requires space, the idea is to create this space by relocating the motorway in a tunnel If this succeeds, the planners then intend to demolish the current station and build a hypermodern new station.
Looking at the schedule, the goal is to have the infranet for the station ready by 2024. In contrast, the A10 tunnelling works will not be completed until 2036. This is the largest construction and infrastructure project ever launched in the Netherlands.
Zuidasdok in detail
Zuidasdok is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. The project will improve accessibility to Amsterdam’s Zuidas district and the northern part of the Randstad, both by road and public transport. Zuidasdok is a partnership that has been set up by Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail and City of Amsterdam.
DWG’s role is to help GVB roll out CBI Tram, which is the central tram control system. DWG will handle integration of the CBI system for the trams at the new Zuidas station on behalf of GVB. Between now and 2024, we and other partners of GVB will work with City of Amsterdam in several phases to ensure that the trams can operate compatibly with the train network. This requires conversion of the signals in the PLC network and new software to implement that conversion in a step-by-step process. Why step-by-step? Our goal is to keep the current infranet for the trams in operation. This project will take one year. After this first year, we look forward to entering the next phase and continuing to contribute our expertise within this extensive project for bringing the overall future vision of City of Amsterdam to fruition.
