S4 Energy has come up with an innovative energy generation solution. Novel, in-house developed flywheels smooth out frequency fluctuations in the electricity grid. S4 Energy specialises in stabilising energy supply and demand. A cloud in front of the sun? Not a breath of wind? Whatever the circumstances, full power needs to be available at all times!
This is also a credo adhered to by DWG, in all areas of our organisation and in our way of working. So we focused the powerful resources of our organisation on S4 Energy’s project. We worked with them from day one to design and produce an installation capable of storing electrical energy in order to stabilise the supply from the power grid. After all, a stable future guarantees continuity!
Inventive high-flyers
Clean, sustainable, flexible and responsible: this is what the energy supply of the future needs to be according to S4 Energy. Our skilled engineers took a giant leap forward into the future, together with the customer, by contributing their hardware, software and IT engineering expertise to automate S4 Energy’s grid stabilisation flywheels. This automation was much needed. Without it, S4 Energy would have difficulty in continuing to develop its unique flywheel concept, which is a global first.
We tackled the project with our usual thoroughness. DWG is currently helping S4 Energy’s engineers automate the flywheels. We are also responsible for engineering the complete energy infrastructure of the new system in Almelo. We also still proactively contribute ideas for further developing the automation set-up and regularly engage in highly productive discussions about possible product innovations. And that gets us buzzing with energy! Sorry, we couldn’t resist a good cliché…
Our approach
Power generation always starts with a spark. A spark that bridges a gap and quickly develops into a burst of energy. This is how our collaboration with S4 Energy began. And that same energy was unleashed in each phase. Based on close contact with each other before each important decision. Because we believe that the best results are the outcome of a powerful collaboration.
The result
The result is awesome: With our help, S4 Energy created three flywheels that are connected to the power grid together with a battery system. They stabilise imbalances in the power grid, based on various automatic algorithms and predictive models. And four more flywheels were added in 2019!
We are also working together on a standardised flywheel configuration. This generic product will give S4 Energy an opportunity to spread its wings. The standard flywheel unit can be installed anywhere in the world and controlled via the cloud. Completely securely, of course. We are exploring all the possibilities of cloud computing, big data, data analytics, IoT, digital twins and much more for this project.
